Cross country runners battled through muggy weather conditions Friday to open the 2018 season with the annual Boone Central Invitational at the Albion Country Club.
Although Boone Central/Newman Grove did not win a team title in the meet, the Cardinals did boast one champion, as Sam Weeder won the high school girls event in a time of 20:46. She finished just strides in front of teammate Jordan Stopak, who finished in 20:50.
The BC/NG (36 points) girls were runners-up in the team standings to a strong Scotus (23) squad. Columbus (51) finished third. Norfolk Catholic (23) won the boys division ahead of Columbus (29). Boone Central/Newman Grove (112) placed fifth.
Although returning state qualifier Jonny Lindgren suffered leg cramps during the boys race, the Cardinals also had a top ten performance by Katie Goodwater (10th, 21:53) and a personal best showing by Bradley Schindel (11th, 17:53).
At the end of the day, Card Coach Tom Dickey was happy with the efforts of his runners.
“The first meet here in Albion is always a good one to get under your belt. This year was no exception,” Dickey commented. “It was warm and extremely muggy, so it made running aggressively nearly impossible. I was very pleased with our effort and the maturity with which they raced.”
