Card softball team wins one in Lakeview tourney

After being idle for a week due to weather complications, the Boone Central/Newman Grove softball team could not keep its recent momentum going Saturday in the Lakeview Invitational at Columbus.
BC/NG saw a seven-game win streak snapped in its opening tourney game. In a wild contest that featured 38 combined hits, Omaha Duchesne/Roncalli finally scored a 14-13 victory on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Duchesne/Roncalli seized an early 5-1 lead, Boone Central/Newman Grove battled back in the mid-innings to take an 8-7 edge – sparked by Emily Groeteke’s two-run fourth inning home run – and Duchesne/Roncalli went back in front 12-8 with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
BC/NG rallied once again in the top of the seventh as Lauren Hedlund delivered a three-run triple. The Cardinals were unable to finish off the win, however, a BC/NG error, ground out and consecutive singles scoring home the winning run for Duchesne/Roncalli.
Boone Central/Newman Grove bounced back to whitewash Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 10-0 (3 innings) in consolation play. The Cardinals took control of the contest with a six-run second inning. Leighann Miller and Stephanie Wright opened the frame with singles, Hedlund walked and two M/H/LHF errors opened the floodgates.
Boone Central/Newman Grove (11-3) could not finish the day on the plus side, as host Lakeview scored a 10-5 victory over the Cardinals with a 10-run fourth inning.
Hedlund scored single runs in the first and third innings to put BC/NG ahead 2-0 in an early pitcher’s duel between Card Keiley Tisthammer and Kassidy Soulliere of Lakeview. It all came apart for BC/NG in the fourth, as the Cardinals committed six errors and issued three walks. Lakeview crossed the plate 10 times while collecting just three singles.
