It’s been a rough season, no doubt, for the young Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team.
The Cardinals have, however, shown improvement as the campaign has progressed and, with stalwart senior Carsen Grape returning from injury in recent weeks, have dropped a number of competitive two and three-point decisions while taking solid foes to the deciding sets of three and five-set matches.
Boone Central/Newman Grove picked a good time to finally break through with its second victory of the season, celebrating Seniors/Parents Night Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of the West Holt Huskies.
The Cardinals started the match with a 25-16 victory, held off a West Holt challenge to win set two 25-21 with a strong finish, and completed the whitewash with a 25-18 decision.
BC/NG (2-20) totaled 25 kills in the match, led by Kylee Rasmussen’s 12. Caitlin Nelson added five, Natalee Luettel four, Kelsey Thompson and Grape two apiece. Paige Nelson directed the Card attack with 20 set assists.
Grape bamboozled the Huskies from the service line, using a devastating short drop serve to register seven of BC/NG’s 13 aces. Rasmussen served three aces, Thompson two. Thompson paced the defensive effort with 13 digs and received support from Maryssa Duerksen (8), Haley Greek (5) and Grape (5).
