Boone Central/Newman Grove bounced back from a season-opening loss to highly-rated Aquinas, scoring the first two dual wins under new Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus. The Cardinals then finished a hectic week with strong performances against larger schools at the Omaha South Invitational Friday.
Boone Central/Newman Grove hit the road for the first time Tuesday and toted home a 38-34 dual win over West Point-Beemer that came down to the final match.
Boone Central/Newman Grove continued its success Thursday with a 43-28 victory over the Creighton Bulldogs in Albion.
“The wrestlers had a great performance, taking out an old power school in Creighton,” Majerus praised. “It’s always nice to get that first win at home, where we practice every day.”
After the scheduled season-opening O’Neill Invite was cancelled due to weather conditions, Boone Central/Newman Grove was able to add a trip to the Omaha South Invitational Friday.
Facing tough Class A and B competition, the Cardinals gave a good account, placing fifth with 123 team points. Lincoln Pius X (199.5) won the tournament ahead of Hastings (180).
“The team competed well. It was nice seeing different teams we don’t normally see,” Majerus noted. “The tournament was full of A and B schools from Omaha and Lincoln, along with #4 Hastings.”
