The Boone Central/Newman Grove mat team took some lumps, and also dished some out, while facing a rugged slate of rated foes this past week.
Beginning with a dual at Class B #8 York Thursday and continuing in Saturday’s Boone Central Duals, which included three Class B teams and three ranked squads, it was a challenging week for the Cardinals.
Host York got early momentum Thursday and it snowballed into a 54-19 dual win by the Dukes.
The Cardinals earned just three wins on the mat, plus one forfeit victory. Senior Jon Merten (220) had BCNG’s highlight of the night with a 6-2 decision over Class B #5 Brayan Rodriguez. Card freshman Gavin Dozler (106) pinned York’s Nick Conrad (3:02) and senior Tyson Haddix won a 10-1 major decision over Nate Streeter-Myers.
“York came out swinging, got the momentum early, and we couldn’t get it back,” said Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus.
The competition got no easier for Boone Central/Newman Grove in Saturday’s annual Boone Central Duals Tournament in Albion. Facing Aurora (Class B Top 10), Boys Town (Class B), Central City (Class B Top 10), Norfolk Catholic and Wood River (Class C Top 10), the Cardinals posted a 3-2 record and placed third in the meet.
“The team wrestled tough against good teams,” Majerus praised. “Even in the duals we lost, I feel we wrestled tough.
“The boys continue to get better every week.”
Ethan Dozler (160), Jon Merten (22) and Dalton Rasmussen (285) all finished 5-0 in the competition for BCNG. Will Grape (120) went 4-1 and Gavin Dozler (106), Ashton Schafer (152) and TJ Weber (170) were all 3-2.
