Boone Central/Newman Grove opened a Dec. 18 triangular in Albion with a convincing victory over Mid-State Conference opponent Wayne, but could not keep pace with state-rated Plainview in the nightcap match.
BCNG had the advantage of four forfeits against Wayne, but also captured wins in five matches decided on the mat in its 52-21 victory over the Blue Devils.
“The team really stepped up and won some matches we weren’t expected to,” praised Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus. “The guys used endurance and grit to stay in matches and outwork the opponents.”
Four of BCNG’s wins came on pins by Ethan Dozler (160), Richard Cleveland (182), Bryce Kennedy (195) and Will Karmann (145), and the fifth was Ashton Schafer’s major decision, boosting the Cardinals’ bonus points.
In the night’s finale, Class D #4 Plainview scored a 48-24 victory over the Cards in a dual that was closer than the score might indicate.
“The team had chances in this dual. We lost three matches within a couple points difference. We come out ahead in those, who knows what the score looks like at the end,” commented Majerus. “The Cardinals worked hard and they continue to get better each week.”
