BCNG wrestlers 5th at Madison

Shorthanded Boone Central/Newman Grove was still able to fight it’s way to a fifth-place finish in a competitive Madison Invitational wrestling tournament Friday.
With four Cardinals unable to compete, BCNG advanced one wrestler to the finals and scored 108.5 points. Lakeview (231) won the large 17-team event, just ahead of Pierce (227).
Senior Jon Merten, runner-up at 220 pounds, led seven Cardinal placewinners. Gavin Dozler (106) placed third, Ethan Dozler (160) and Will Grape (120) took fourth, Ashton Schafer (145) was fifth, and TJ Weber (170) and Richard Cleveland (182) finished sixth.
“This tournament has some very tough teams, and if you don’t show up (ready), your errors will show,” Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus commented. “Overall, the Cardinals wrestled as expected, but have obvious work to do with districts just around the corner.
“I felt like the freshmen really stepped up and competed well. They continue to grow and get better. Injuries and sickness were a concern, with four wrestlers unable to compete.”
Boone Central/Newman Grove has an important week at hand, traveling to Columbus Thursday for duals against Lakeview and Scotus, then hosting the annual Boone Central Invitational Saturday in Albion.
