Ice jams along Cedar River

During the warm spell last weekend, ice jams were starting to build up over at bridges on the Cedar River near Cedar Rapids. Top photo shows the historic bridge at the east edge of Cedar Rapids. This bridge was closed Saturday night by the Boone County Road Department and Sheriff’s Department due to some flooding east of bridge, and it remained closed Monday. Lower photo shows the ice buildup on the north side of the Highway 56 bridge at Cedar Rapids, with lowland flooding to the north and east. This bridge remained open. Some ice buildup had also occurred at the Pilot Knot Bridge near Primrose, but that bridge was not threatened, according to Boone County Highway Superintendent Stacey Ziemba. Motorists are advised to watch for rising water when crossing bridges, and do not attempt to drive through the water. Photos courtesy of Kim Schilousky, Cedar Rapids Press
