Albion 18U posts 3-2 record in state softball tourney

Claire Choat and the Albion 18U softball team won three games in the Class C State Tournament

After losing its first two games in the 2019 Class C State Softball Tournament at Hastings, Albion 18 & Under bounced back with two straight victories before being eliminated by Lawrence Saturday.
“We had an unlucky draw for our first game. Adams is a good team,” Coach Tracy Hedlund noted. “We lost two, then won two. The tournament is set up so all teams play at least three games. Once you have played three, you must win to keep playing.”
Adams Stingers 7, Albion 18U 2
After taking an early lead in Friday’s state tournament opener, Albion 18U could not match a tough Adams Softball Stingers outfit and dropped a 7-2 decision.
Albion scored its only two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Lauren Hedlund and Ashtyn Hedlund led off with consecutive singles and each stole second base. Lauren Hedlund eventually scored on a ground out and Ashtyn Hedlund came home on Abby Brodersen’s single. Albion maintained that edge until Adams knotted the score with a fourth-inning run. The Stingers then used back-to-back doubles and a triple to push home three runs in the fifth.
T.-Herman 6, Albion 18U 2
An early flurry of runs propelled Tekamah-Herman to a 6-2 victory over Albion 18U Friday night.
Tekamah-Herman smacked a leadoff home run to open the game, then took advantage of consecutive Albion errors and two singles to go ahead 4-0. Lauren and Ashtyn Hedlund again opened with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the frame and scored on a double by Claire Choat. That was all Albion would get, however, mustering just two additional hits against Tekamah-Herman pitching.
Albion 18U 18, Linc. Lightning 2
Albion bats came to life and the 18U’s broke through with a big 18-2 triumph over Lincoln Lightning Silver in three innings Saturday morning. Shalee Grape led the offensive outburst, driving in five runs, and Cunningham, Wright and Jeslynn Beckman produced three RBI apiece.
Albion 18U 10, Mid-Plains 2
Albion 18U carried its momentum into the afternoon and thumped Mid-Plains Prowlers 10-2. Albion took a 3-2 lead, held on to that tenuous edge through four innings, then sealed the decision with a late burst of runs in the fifth and sixth.
Cunningham doubled home Lauren Hedlund, who had singled, to get scoring started in the top of the first and later went home on a ground out. Choat reached by error and scored on Brooke Groth’s base hit. Ashtyn Hedlund slugged a one-out solo home run in the fifth and Albion added three more runs with singles by Cunningham, Choat and Groth, and Brodersen’s double. Albion 18U finished the win with three more runs in the sixth, as Cunningham singled and Choat hit an RBI double.
Lawrence 10, Albion 18U 6
Lawrence built an early lead, then held off Albion comeback attempts to eliminate the 18U’s with a 10-6 decision Saturday evening. The victors never trailed after taking advantages of 5-2 and 8-3.
Albion got runs by Ashtyn Hedlund and Cunningham to open the game, but Lawrence quickly turned the tables with five runs in the bottom of the first. Ashtyn Hedlund hit her second state tourney solo home run in the third and Lawrence answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
