Just a few holes and a handful of strokes. That’s how close Boone Central junior Abby Brodersen was to school history and a state championship gold medal.
As it was, Brodersen became the third girl in the history of the Cardinal golf program to finish as a state runner-up in the NSAA Class C Girls State Golf Championship at North Platte’s Lake Maloney Golf Course October 14-15.
A tremendous finish to a dominant season, in which Brodersen won seven gold medals and runner-up honors in the C-2 District championship.
The Card junior fashioned a consistent 40/38-78 in Monday’s opening round and was tied atop the Class C leaderboard with Kimball’s Payton Wise, who rebounded from a front-nine 43 with a finishing 35.
Brodersen began Tuesday play with a 38 on her first nine and enjoyed the tournament lead midway through her final nine holes before suffering a triple bogey during a bumpy finish.
Cozad sophomore Lynzi Becker, two strokes back after day one, was in contention with a front-nine 39 Tuesday, then shot a rock-solid 36 on her back side for a second round 75. That finish allowed her to seize the gold when Brodersen carded a 44 on her final nine for an overall 82.
