Marissa Preister

An essay by Marissa Preister was recently chosen as a winning entry in the American Legion Auxiliary’s Americanism Essay Contest at the national level. Marissa is the daughter of Scott and Kay Preister of Petersburg and a student at Pope John Central Catholic High School.
The competition began at the local level last spring when Preister won Class IV (freshmen and sophomores). Her essay then advanced to the Northwest Division competition and finally to nationals. Her essay was sponsored by the Elgin American Legion Auxiliary.
Students were asked to write an essay on “How can we address and prevent veteran homelessness in our communities?”
