Firemen called to small fire north of town

The Petersburg Fire Department was called two miles north of Petersburg on Monday afternoon at 4:16 p.m.
Larry Beierman was harvesting corn when a raccoon got stuck in his cornhead causing the slip clutch to shower sparks into plant material igniting several small fires.
Fire Chief Baumgartner said that they were fortunate that it was a cloudy day with high humidity which helped keep the fire from spreading. There was no damage to the combine.
The department reminds everyone harvesting to have their fire extinguishers in their combines and to make sure it’s filled.
The department will fill fire extinguishers. Leave extinguishers at the fire hall with your name on it.
When burning leaves, remember to have a water hose connected or a bucket of water near the site due to the current dry conditions.
