Boone Central got the 2019-20 girls basketball season off to a great start on opening weekend, defeating Hartington Cedar Catholic and Lakeview.
The Cardinals tipped off the campaign with a strong second half and resulting 51-40 victory over visiting Mid-State Conference foe Cedar Catholic Friday.
Senior Morningside College recruit Lauren Hedlund kept the Cardinals close early with 13 first-half points, helping close a 13-5 deficit to 21-18 by halftime.
Boone Central dominated after halftime, reeling off a 24-5 run to take a 41-19 lead at one point. Cedar Catholic defensive pressure and some free throw problems in the fourth quarter narrowed the final margin of a still-impressive Cardinal win.
“We wanted our girls to get back to being the aggressors on the defensive end and create more turnovers in the second half,” said Card Coach Andy Imus. “The girls responded with the 24-5 scoring burst. They shot 9-of-13 and had six assists in the third quarter alone.”
Boone Central followed its Friday success with a solid 38-29 triumph over Lakeview Saturday at Columbus.
The Cardinals used a swift start to kick start their second win of the season, racing to a 12-0 lead and taking a 23-9 advantage to halftime as Ashtyn (2) and Lauren Hedlund combined for a trio of 3-point baskets. Lauren Hedlund netted 13 of BC’s 23 points in the opening half. Neither team had much offensive success in the second half, although Lakeview finished with a 14-3 fourth-quarter burst after trailing 35-15.
“Our full-court defense caused Lakeview problems in the second quarter as we took a 23-9 lead into halftime,” Imus noted. “We talked about finishing the second half, to continue to pressure Lakeview in the full court and to turn those turnovers into points.”
