Newman Grove house is total loss after Dec. 20 fire

Newman Grove fire fighters pulled down a portion of the Martinson home that was collapsing after the fire. A portion of the structure is still standing.

Newman Grove Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire on north 11th Street in Newman Grove, Friday morning, Dec. 20, at 7:45 a.m.
The home, owned by the Forrest Martinson Estate, was heavily involved when firemen arrived, with fire from the basement to the attic, according to Craig Lilja, fire chief.
The home was considered a total loss. A portion of the north end of the structure was collapsing and had to be pulled down.
Cause of the fire was listed as undetermined after inspection by the State Fire Marshall.
The home had been damaged in the flooding last March, and a contractor had been doing some work inside, Lilja said.
Newman Grove Fire Department had 18 personnel and six units on site. After the initial fire was extinguished, firemen were called back to the scene to extinguish some embers in one section. It was fully extinguished by 6:30 p.m.
Mr. Martinson passed away on Aug. 25, 2019.
