Battling a typically tough field of competition, Boone Central wrestlers had a successul day in Saturday’s Boone Central ‘Dale Bonge’ Invitational.
Although Boone Central did not have a varsity champion, 15 Cardinals earned medals overall, with two JV champs and nine varsity medalists. Gavin Dozler was the 113 pound runner-up in varsity competition.
Boone Central placed fifth in the varsity tournament, just 11 points back of third-place St. Paul.
“Overall, a successful day. We were very close to placing third,” said Boone Central Coach Josh Majerus. “Aiden Nore and Colten Ray won their JV brackets. I thought Gavin wrestled very smart and tough against a highly-rated Class B Pierce kid in the finals. Have to be able to take points when they present themselves.
“That goes for the whole team. Feel like we’re close to doing really good things – have to clean up the scrappy moves and just score points. Being scrappy is a good thing, but it can also get you in trouble.
“Need to clean up our technique a little and work on takedowns. The athletes are catching on.”
