Merle Klassen of Albion said he feels very fortunate.
He was in the right place — Boone County Health Center’s Rudman Rehabilitation Center — when he suffered a heart attack on Wednesday morning, Feb. 5, 2020.
He recalls just finishing a session on the treadmill when he felt the attack coming on and calling out to staff member Sharon Kunzman.
That’s when he blacked out. He doesn’t remember anything else until he woke up at mid-afternoon in an Omaha hospital.
But many things happened in the interim and his wife, Janice, who was also at rehab that morning, remembers them vividly.
“Within seconds (of his collapse), there were 15 to 20 nurses and doctors around him,” said Janice. “They performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) right away. His heart stopped twice before they had him stabilized.”
