Middle school addition will occupy current playground area

A proposed plan for the Boone Central Middle School addition is now being reviewed by engineers and was discussed briefly at Monday night’s school board meeting.
The current plan calls for the addition to be built on the present elementary playground site in Albion.
Under this plan, the playground would be moved to occupy Prairie Street on the north side of the elementary building.
An engineering review of the plan is part of the project design phase now underway, involving DLR Group as architects and W. A. Klinger as construction manager.
The addition plan, still subject to changes, includes a new K-8 media center, 10 new classrooms, and middle school administration/reception area. A separate entrance for the new middle school will be located on Fifth Street.
Along with the addition, plans call for four existing elementary classrooms to be retrofitted with doors that make those rooms accessible both from the middle school addition and the elementary.
“We anticipate that only two of those four existing rooms will be used by the middle school initially,” said Superintendent Nicole Hardwick. “The new doors will allow for flexibility in the future.”
The preliminary plan includes one interior door into the high school classroom area to the south so middle school students can access those areas as needed.
