Albion’s Post #162/Cornerstone Legion baseball teams are on a nice roll to begin their 2020 summer seasons.
Albion Cornerstone hosted Creighton Tuesday, June 24, with the local Juniors rallying for an 8-7 victory in the opener.
Creighton scored three times in both the first and third innings before Cornerstone could get untracked. James Fogleman had an RBI single as the Albion side struck for three in the fourth. Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Cornerstone made a dramatic comeback started by Kyle Preister’s base hit. Seth Wright and David Miller rapped RBI singles, as Preister, Calvin Webster, Wright, Whalen Rother and Miller crossed the plate without Creighton recording an out.
Albion’s Cornerstone Seniors dropped a 2-1 decision in a terrific early-season pitching duel. Neither team could cross the plate until Creighton tallied twice in the top of the seventh against reliever Kyle Preister. Wright doubled and scored in the bottom of the frame for Albion, but that was all Cornerstone could muster. Ryan Kramer twirled five sterling innings of shutout baseball, striking out five.
Albion Cornerstone traveled to O’Neill Friday for a doubleheader.
The Cornerstone Juniors were frustrated at the plate in a 4-2 loss to the Irish. Trent Patzel singled and scored on a base hit by Wright in the fourth, and Albion’s only other run came in the sixth when Carsten Bird singled and scored. O’Neill scored just one run against Cornerstone starter Sam Grape in four innings, but touched Fogleman for three in the final two frames.
Cornerstone’s Seniors got back on track with a boisterous 13-2 victory in the nightcap.
Bird’s leadoff double sparked a two-run second inning. Leading 4-1, Albion pulled away in the final two innings. Grape and Wright had hits in a four-run sixth and Webster, Patzel, Zach Pfeifer, Fogleman and Kramer cracked consecutive singles in the five-run seventh. Bird got the win, allowing a single run in 5 1/3 innings while fanning 10.
Albion Cornerstone closed the week with victories over visiting Ord Sunday at the Albion Sports Complex.
The Cornerstone Juniors scored six runs in the first inning and topped Ord 8-3. Albion benefited from four walks, a batter hit by pitch and an Ord error in the opening frame. Patzel earned the win, allowing three runs in 3 1/3.

The local nine took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with Kramer and Grape delivering hits. Preister, Pfeifer and Kramer singled in a three-run second and Wright had another base hit in the third, as Albion went up 7-3. Wright was hit by a pitch in the fifth and went home on Webster’s base hit, and Cornerstone added a final run in the seventh without a hit.
Kramer had two hits and scored twice, while Webster drove in two runs. Preister was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Kramer went 3 2/3 in relief, surrenduring a single run.
