Dave Spiegel Memorial Tourney helps area cancer patients — but won’t be held this year

Linda Spiegel, second from right, and her daughters (l.-r.) Michelle Tomjack, Brandy Trummer and Christy McCready plan to hold the Dave Spiegel Memorial Golf Tournament again in 2021.
After much consideration, the Spiegel family has decided not to hold the annual Dave Spiegel Memorial Golf Tournament in 2020.
The tournament began in 2014 and is usually held in late August. It has raised thousands of dollars each year to assist area cancer patients ove the past six years.
The tournament will not be held this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the family will still be helping area cancer patients wherever they can.
And the tounament is planned again next year at Albion Country Club once the coronavirus threat is minimized.
“It has been very gratifying for us to be able to help cancer patients, and it’s not just us but the entire community helping,” said Linda Spiegel. “It has been a blessing and part of the healing process for our family.”
Her husband, Dave, was a State Patrol Trooper for many years at O’Neill, and later served as Boone County Sheriff for seven years. He died in January 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
The first memorial golf tournament was held later that year.
Funds raised from the tournament go directly to cancer patients in the Boone and Holt County areas, mainly to cover transportation, lodging and basic living expenses during treatment.
