Battle Creek used its home course advantage to win the Mid-State Conference team championship, but Boone Central senior Abby Broderson toted home the individual gold medal Thursday.
Broderson finished with a second-round 36 to post an 18-hole 79 and win the conference championship by five strokes. Medalist runner-up Megan Lutt (84) led host Battle Creek (386) to the team title at Evergreen Hill Golf Course. After a rough opening round, Boone Central battled back to place second with a 394 total.
“The conditions didn’t make for easy golf Thursday. The wind was strong and the course played as one of the most difficult we’ve competed on this fall,” said Cardinal Coach Amy Ahlers. “That said, I’m proud of what the girls were able to accomplish. We may not have come away with the win, but the way I saw our team battle back was everything I could ask for as a coach.
“We got off to a little bit of a rocky start on the front nine, shooting 210. Each of the girls stayed patient and fought back like crazy on their back nines, posting a 184. The mental toughness it takes to make that happen is truly amazing! An overall score of 394 is something they should feel good about.”
Broderson had outstanding support from her teammates Thursday, with Rachel Malander (100) placing sixth, Taylor Beierman (106) 11th and Lauren Kohtz (109) 15th. Emmah Benson shot a 119, finishing 28th.
