Bam!
Just the way a coach would draw it up.
The way the Boone Central Cardinals completed the pre-holiday portion of their 2020-21 wrestling season with an impressive 48-21 dual victory over host Fillmore Central Dec. 22.
“The Cardinal wrestling team could not ask for a better way to end the first half of the season,” Boone Central Coach Josh Majerus stated. “We dualed a tough Fillmore Central squad that has a lot of great wrestlers. This is a dual everyone loves to watch.”
The Cardinals grabbed an early 9-0 lead with a decision by Aiden Nore (132) and pin by Jaxon Schafer (138), but Fillmore Central rallied from a 12-3 deficit to edge in front 15-12 with a pin at 160 and disqualification victory at 170.
That’s when Boone Central caught fire. The Cards racked up four straight pinfalls – Hank Hudson (182), Richard Cleveland (195), Taylor Weber (220), Dakota Rose (285) – to build a 36-15 lead that virtually assured the dual win. After Fillmore Central scored a pin at 106, the Cardinals sealed the decision with three final victories.
It was not exactly easy pickings, however.
“Almost every match was unpredictable. Not many matches were lopsided,” Majerus said. “Our team got on a roll and finished ahead in 10 of 14 matches. The four we lost were close matches and could have gone either way.
“For the first time this season I felt we were full strength, wrestled six minutes and got after it. Every weight class was wrestled without any openings.”
Following a stretch of tough competition – dual at York, Boone Central Duals tournament, Fillmore Central – in a span of six days, Boone Central will now get a short break before hosting the Newman Grove Invitational today (Dec. 30).
