. The Boone Central Cardinals came back from a five-day holiday layoff to placed second in the 2020 Newman Grove Holiday Invitational Dec. 30.
Boone Central was the only team in the tournament able to challenge Class C #1 Central City, finishing 16 points behind the Bison (275-259).
Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus felt it was a strong finish to the first half of the season.
“We tried to keep up with top-rated Central City, but fell short with all Central City champions,” Majerus said. “I thought the team wrestled very well. I saw a lot of techniques we practice. It’s nice seeing it carrying over from the practice room.
“We filled all 14 weight classes and had 21 wrestlers. I was happy seeing our performance from the Fillmore Central dual win prior to Christmas break carry over after five days off.”
Gavin Dozler (126), Richard Cleveland (182) and Taylor Weber (195) were weight class championship for Boone Central. Ted Hemmingsen (120), Sam Grape (145), William Karmann (152), Ashton Schafer (160) and Dakota Rose (285) were Cardinal runners-up.
