Cardinals win first ‘20-21 mat title

Boone Central has been on a pretty good roll lately. That surging momentum continued Saturday with BC’s first tournament title of the 2020-21 season.
After facing the #1 rated teams in Classes B, C and D the previous week, the battle-tested Cardinals bested top ten contenders Ord and Fillmore Central to win the Gibbon Bill Foster Invitational championship.
It was a dominant team effort, as 11 Boone Central wrestlers placed in the top four of their respective weight classes, including champions Gavin Dozler and Taylor Weber.
That balance and success pleased Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus, whose team is now 5th in Class C dual rankings.
“We took 13 wrestlers, competed in 12 weight classes, and placed top four in 11 of the 12. Gavin and Taylor won their weight classes,” Majerus praised. “The team continues to get better each week.
“The entire team wrestled extremely well. At one time we had 20 wins and one loss. Carson Wood topped off a Thayer Central kid who won his bracket last weekend. Gavin Dozler upset the #2 in the state, crushing him 8-0. Jaxon Schafer twice upset the #8 and placed third.”
Boone Central will compete at the Madison Invitational Friday. The following week will be a big one for the Cardinals, with a home triangular against Lakeview and Scotus Tuesday, the Mid-State Conference Championships Thursday at Pierce, and the annual Boone Central Invitational Saturday, Jan. 30.
