Two champs lead BC mat team to third

Despite competing shorthanded, the Boone Central Cardinals continued to post some impressive results against tough wrestling competition this past week.
With two weight class champions and seven finalists, Boone Central followed up a Tuesday dual victory by placing third in Friday’s Madison Invite, trailing only Class B Lakeview and Class C Top 10 Logan View.
Carson Wood (113) and Ashton Schafer (160) won gold medals in the competition. Runners-up for the Cardinals were Gavin Dozler (120), Ted Hemmingsen (126), William Karmann (152), Richard Cleveland (182) and Dakota Rose (285).
Boone Central was hampered in the team race by two open weight classes, along with the absence of 195-pound senior standout Taylor Weber.
All in all, Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus could see positives, as Boone Central continues to build toward looming district competition.
“We placed third to Class B Lakeview and C #4 Logan View with 189 points and seven finalists. Carson and Ashton finished on top of their brackets,” Majerus commented. “Carson beat the C #9 to make the finals and topped off B #6 Bargen in the championship. Ashton pinned the D #6 in the finals.
“We were without varsity wrestlers at 106 and 132, and missing Taylor Weber. I thought the kids wrestled as expected or better. We left some matches out there, but that happens. We picked up some wins that will help us down the road as we approach the postseason.”
