New arena created opportunity for local barrel race series

A horse and rider round one of the three barrels in competition at the Niewohner Arena last weekend.
A new indoor arena at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Albion provided an opportunity for Todd Flinn of Newman Grove to create a new winter barrel race series here.
Todd and his wife, Angie, created the “Toofpik Barrel Series,” which opened in the Boone County Ag & Education Center, Niewohner Arena, on the weekend of Jan. 15-17. Competitions are held every other weekend, starting Friday evening and continuing Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The series runs for six weekends. Jan. 29-31 was the second session with 35 competing in the open division and 19 in the youth division (age 18 and younger).
Additional regular sessions of the series will be Feb. 5-7, Feb. 19-21, March 12-14, March 26-28.
The finals will be April 9-11.
