First step taken.
With the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) implementing a sub-district/district format in 2021, Boone Central competed in the C-1A Sub-District at David City Saturday.
It wasn’t quite a perfect day for the Cardinals, but it wasn’t far off. Boone Central placed second in team scoring to host David City and, most importantly, advanced 12 wrestlers to this week’s district tournament.
Ashton Schafer was Boone Central’s lone Sub-District champion, pinning a pair of foes at 160 pounds. Ted Hemmingsen (126), Richard Cleveland (182) and Taylor Weber (195) were weight class runners-up.
Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus was pleased with Boone Central’s efforts and results at David City, but also noted it always hurts to see some wrestler’s seasons end short of Omaha.
“We took 14 participants and placed second as a team. Twelve individuals will continue their seasons after placing in the top four of their weight classes,” Majerus commented. “It was disappointing to see two individuals end their season, but overall they both wrestled tough.
“The twelve remaining will wrestle this weekend at home for a district title. If they place top four they will qualify for the state tournament in Omaha.”
Boone Central will host the C-1 District in Albion Saturday with 2021 NSAA State Wrestling Championship berths on the line. Doors will open at Boone Central High School at 10 a.m., with wrestling beginning at 11 a.m.
