Extreme cold forced school closings, rolling blackouts

Most area schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 15 and 16, due to extreme cold temperatures both days.
Much of Nebraska experienced record cold early this week.
Thermometers nosedived starting Sunday. Low temperature in Albion reached minus 32 degrees Monday and minus 35 on Tuesday morning, with highs also well below zero both days.
Several Boone County area communities were affected by rolling power blackouts in the early morning hours Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Due to bitter cold, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) declared a Level 3 Energy Emergency Alert for Tuesday.
Area towns impacted by the rolling blackouts, according to Loup Public Power District, included portions of Albion, Newman Grove, Lindsay, Genoa, St. Edward and Genoa. Some rural customers were also affected.
