Riverside speech team wins district speech

Riverside High School won the D2-2 District speech meet at Newman Grove on March 9, and nine Riverside event entries qualified for this week’s state competition.
Riverside scored 274 team points, outdistancing second place Pope John Central Catholic (150) and third place Elgin High School (104). Lindsay Holy Family was sixth in the district meet with 54 points.
Riverside has eight students going to state, including three — Molly Carraher, Dalton Rankin and Beau Hawn — who will each compete in two events at the state meet.
State qualifiers for Riverside are:
• Dalton Rankin and Molly Carraher in duet acting (first place);
• Beau Hawn and Brady Buechter in duet acting (third place);
• Hope Schalk in entertainment speaking (second);
• Dalton Rankin (second) and Sadie Baldwin (third) in extemporaneous speaking;
• Molly Carraher (first) in informative speaking;
• Beau Hawn (first) in oral interpretation of humorous prose;
• Austin Hemmingsen (first) and Emma Rankin (third) in persuasive speaking.
