After last week’s Boone Central Invitational, Cardinal Track & Field Coach Susan Roberts said she was looking forward to her teams facing stout Class B competition in the Northwest Dave Gee Invitational at Grand Island.
Boone Central athletes definitely got that challenge and acquitted themselves quite well.
Vieing in a loaded field with many 2021 athletes on state leader lists, Cardinals struck gold four times, established a new school record and recorded a number of personal season bests at Grand Island Friday.
“Our boys set a new Boone Central record in the 4×100 meter relay,” Roberts noted. “Our relays really performed well. Personal records for the girls 4×800 and 4×100 teams and the boys 4×400.
“We had some great marks and several season bests.”
The quartet of Parker Borer, Ryan Kramer, Dustin Andreasen and Wyatt Nissen won the 4×100 meter relay and set a new school mark with a time of 43.86.
Individually, Kramer was the highest-flying Cardinal. Along with the 4×100 success, the senior standout swept gold in the 110 meter hurdles (15.36) and 300 meter intermediate hurdles (41.32), lowering his Albion News/Boone County Tribune area leading time in both events. Kramer also placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5’11.
Nissen was again strong in the dashes, placing second to Gage Steinke (GICC) in the 100 meters (11.39) and 200 meters (23.02). Borer was close behind in the 200, placing third in 23.40. Jackson Roberts was runner-up to Kramer in the 300 hurdles (41.76) and placed fourth in the long jump (20’5).
Boone Central’s 4×400 relay team also placed second, with Borer, Roberts, Brant Benes and Nissen teaming for a time of 3:35.50.
The Lady Cardinal 4×800 relay was outstanding, as well, with Alicia Weeder, Autumn Simons, Jordan Stopak and Sam Weeder taking gold medals in an area-best time of 10:08.35. Boone Central’s 4×100 team of Alicia Weeder, Ashlyn Krohn, Ava Buhlmann and Ava Duerksen placed third (51.92).
Stopak (12:21.57) was runner-up in the 3200 meter run and Buhlmann (49.90) placed third in the 300 meter low hurdles.
Mara Ranslem took fourth place in the high jump and Sam Weeder finished sixth, both topping 4’9. Elyssa Cuevas (96’8) placed sixth in the discus competition.
