Boone Central’s boys golf team wrapped up the 2021 spring season with competition in the C-2 District at Oakland Golf Club May 18.
The Cardinals finished 11th in the 15-team field with an 18 hole score of 390. Host Oakland-Craig was the C-2 champion with a 327 team total. Also qualifying for the 2021 Class C Nebraska State Championships were Scotus (329) and Aquinas (331).
Brady Smith of Archbishop Bergan was the C-2 gold medalist with a splendid round of 70. Nicklaus Fleming of Scotus and Oakland-Craig’s Carson Thomsen each shot 72, placing second and third respectively. Members of the team qualifiers and the remainder of the individual top ten qualified for state.
Freshman Thane Hardwick once again paced Boone Central, firing an 86 (40/46) and placing 16th in the large field of golfers.
“This was definitely the best Class C district for teams and individual golfers,” Boone Central Coach Eric Albers said. “I mean, when you have to shoot 80 to finish tenth, it shows you how high quality the golf was.
“Thane Hardwick shot an 86 as a freshman – that was really impressive. I thought we should have shot a little better than we did as a team.
“The season overall was a success, as we progressed and took great strides from the beginning of the season to the end. We gained a lot of experience for next season, as we didn’t have a senior on the team. The emphasis is to play as much golf as they possibly can. I think we can do some really great things next year.”
Carsten Bird (46/54-100), Calvin Webster (55/46-101) and Jacob Devine (54/49-103) completed Boone Central’s team score. James Erickson carded a round of 115 (61/54).
