The Albion Cornerstone Legion Seniors concluded the 2021 American Legion regular season with a pair of wins this past week. Albion Cornerstone (11-9) will now try to carry the momentum of a three-game win streak into the American Legion Seniors Area 3 postseason tournament beginning Friday, July 23, at West Point (Tournament bracket had not been released at Albion News/Boone County Tribune deadline).
Albion Seniors 11, Schuyler 0
Albion Cornerstone rode an eight-run second inning and stellar pitching to an 11-0 five-inning victory over Schuyler in the final home game of 2021 at Leon Nelson Memorial Field (Albion Sports Complex) July 15.
Cornerstone sent 12 batters to the plate in the second, with eight straight reaching base and scoring after the initial two batters of the inning made outs. Sam Grape, Seth Wright and Calvin Webster singled in the inning, James Fogleman and Carsten Bird cracked doubles, and Albion also took advantage of a walk and two Schuyler errors.
In all, the visitors committed seven errors, helping Cornerstone tally its 11 runs on only seven hits.
Albion Seniors 12, Creighton 3
Albion Cornerstone closed the regular season with a robust 12-3 victory at Creighton Saturday.
The hosts took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Cornerstone tallied 12 straight runs over the next five innings.
Bird drove in Kahlandt and Fogleman in the second, and Albion took its first lead in the third with Grape plating Webster and Preister rapping an RBI double. Fogleman’s double capped a three-run fifth and Cornerstone polished off the win in the sixth, scoring four runs without a hit.
The Albion Seniors again benefitted from their opponent’s largesse, scoring the dozen runs on eight hits, four walks and eight Creighton errors.
