Boone Central has even week on diamond

The Boone Central Cardinals prepped for their annual softball invitational tournament with a 7-4 victory over Blue River (2-6) Aug. 31 at David City. The Cards boosted an early 1-0 advantage to 7-1 with four runs in the third inning and a pair in the fourth, then held off Blue River’s late rally attempt. Madisyn Cunningham’s double and singles by Ashtyn Hedlund, Payton Sullivan, Lauryn Wright and Jeslynn Beckman drove the big third.

Hosting the Boone Central Invitational Saturday at the Albion Sports Complex, the Cardinals posted a 1-2 record, which included two exciting one-run decisions.
Boone opened the day with its only victory, edging Centura/Central Valley 4-3 on Ava Buhlmann’s steal of home in the sixth inning. CCV took a 3-2 lead in the third, but Hedlund shut the door from there, allowing Boone to rally with runs in the fifth and sixth. Carlie Langan walked, advanced on a stolen base and ground out, and scored on a passed ball in the fifth to tie. Sullivan cracked a leadoff single in the sixth and pinch runner Buhlmann promptly stole second and third bases, then home, for the winner.  The Cardinals could never find a groove in a noon contest and dropped an 8-3 decision to Pierce. The Bluejays attacked Boone starter Beckman, scoring two, four and two runs in the mid innings to go ahead 8-1. Boone Central scored single runs in the final two innings, but could not challenge.  In its final game of the day, facing Polk County for the third time this season, Boone Central (4-5) lost a 2-1 heartbreaker. Hedlund gave the Cardinals a fighting chance, limiting Polk to two runs and fanning 5 batters. Boone simply could not break through at the plate. The Cardinals had 11 hits, but could not get the big raps when needed. Addy Donelson scored Boone’s only run in the fourth, leading off with a single and going home on Sullivan’s double. It looked like a big inning brewing, as Cunningham and Sullivan followed Donelson with back-to-back doubles and Hedlund singled. Cunningham was thrown out trying to score, however, and Sullivan was caught attempting to steal home.
