Boone Central wrestlers face tough foes at start

As the old saying goes, “If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.”
Boone Central did not get the win in its season-opening dual Thursday, Dec. 2 at David City, but battled Class C #1 Aquinas gamely in a 43-27 loss to the Monarchs.
“They are good, and they have 10 rated wrestlers,” said Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus. “Respect to them, as their team always stayed in good position and won the matches they needed to to beat us.
“I saw a lot of talent on the mat for both teams. We need to work on getting takedowns and not giving up bonus points in big duals.”

Boone Central hit the road again Friday, and again did not shirk facing top-notch competition early in the season. The Cardinals, who move up to Class B this season, proved their mettle by placing second in the Blair Duals.
Boone defeated Platteview, Ralston, Schuyler and North Star, losing only to highly-ranked host Blair.
“This is a new tournament on our schedule and has some very respectable Class B schools in it. We went 4-1 and brought home the second-place trophy and medals for all 20 wrestlers on our roster.
“Our only loss was to Blair. They have 54 boys currently on their roster. That is not far off of our total boys enrollment. Blair is ranked very high and wrestle well.
“I thought the boys went to compete and represented well – we won more matches we weren’t supposed to win than the other way around.”
