Class C1 #3 rated Kearney Catholic jolted Boone Central with an extended 23-4 run in the second quarter, ultimately resulting in a staggering 41-12 halftime lead and 63-44 victory.
While the Cardinals struggled to get the ball to fall, the host Stars were hot from the outset. A 7-0 blitz in the final minute of the first quarter put Catholic in front 18-8 and Brett Mahoney’s nine second-quarter points, along with six by Dylan Merz, drove the decisive second period domination.
“We competed in the first quarter, as we were down 11-8 with the ball and a minute to go. Kearney Catholic exploded from there,” said Boone Coach Justin Harris. “They finished the quarter with a 7-0 run. We hit a three to start the second, but didn’t score again until the final minute of the quarter.
“Catholic took it to us, but we did have opportunities. We took 20 shots in the first half, but were 0-of-9 near the rim. Finishing will be a focus for us moving forward. Finishing these plays gives our team more confidence, which we need.
“We have some great opportunities to win some games and compete against good competition the next couple weeks.”
