Card wrestlers strong in duals, tourney

Boone Central was primed and ready Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The Cardinals stormed into Plainview and delivered a pair of overwhelming dual victories over the host Pirates (51-13) and Mid-State Conference foe Wayne (53-18).
“Those two teams are very good,” noted Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus. “Plainview is rated #4 in Class D and Wayne was 3-0 going in.
“We showed up to wrestle. Going into some matches not knowing what the outcome would be, the guys did their thing and won. A lot of matches went six minutes, which only meant we got better. It’s always nice to see us compete and win against tough opponents.
“Carson Wood, Gavin Dozler and Jaxson Schafer all topped higher seeds than they were.”

Wrestlers and wrestling teams always find out a little about themselves in the annual High Plains Norm Manstedt Invitational at Central Community College- Columbus.
The Manstedt Invite is one of the largest, and toughest, mid-season events in outstate Nebraska, and competitors earn every win, pin and place over the two-day weekend.
Cardinals gave stellar performances, according to Coach Josh Majerus, and finished fifth in the 22-team field.
“Great weekend of wrestling with loaded brackets. We advanced nine of 11 wrestlers to day two of the toughest all-class tournament on our schedule,” Majerus praised. “We placed fifth missing scorers Grape, Karmann and Stokes. We were six points from third place.
“The team really showed they can compete at a high level – I was impressed with our efforts. They are all doing good things. If we made a few small adjustments, we would bring home a third place plaque and a few champions.
“We’re right where we want to be this time of the season.”
