Cardinals win 2nd straight Gibbon Invite championship

The Boone Central Cardinals rode into Gibbon Friday with a mission, then toted home the first place trophy from the Gibbon Bill Foster Invitational for the second straight season.
It was an impressive day, according to Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus. Boone was led by individual champions Carson Wood (120) and Colton Ray (170), and had 12 wrestlers place in the top four of their weight classes, including five runners-up (Talan Stokes, Gavin Dozler, Sam Grape, Ashton Schafer, Hank Hudson).
“Great to win the Gibbon Invite in back-to-back years with two champions and 12 top four,” Majerus acknowledged. “When we can score points in every weight class, it’s going to be hard to beat us.
“I’m impressed with how the guys are wrestling. They are actually doing moves and getting pins. Our varsity is competing at high intensity, and our JV guys are knocking opponents out of the bracket. Having depth is important when you look at wrestling as a team.
“It’s nice to see for our school and community.”
Along with the championships by Wood and Ray, Ashton Schafer provided another highlight for the Cardinals. After being named the Cardinal Stud of the Week for his recent performance in the Newman Grove Holiday Tournament, Schafer captured his 100th career win at Gibbon as the 160-pound runner-up.
“Nicely done Ashton,” Majerus said. “When you have guys reach that feat, others will aim for it.”
