Boone golfers get break, compete at Lakeview

Boone Central golfers finally caught a break, competing in the Lakeview Invitational at Quail Run Golf Course (Columbus) on a day of pleasant weather conditions.
The Cardinals placed fifth in the field of 12 teams, with four team members shooting scores below 90 and another missing by two strokes.
“This was the first tournament we played where the weather was great,” said Card Coach Eric Albers. “I was happy to see four out of five golfers shoot scores in the 80s … that was the first time all year we accomplished that.
“While I thought we had opportunities to shoot lower numbers, I’m very happy with our progress throughout the season. The guys were really hitting great shots, but struggled a bit when it came to putting.”
Carsten Bird led Boone with an 18-hole 86. Rounding out the team score were Thane Hardwick (87), Jacob Devine (87) and Calvin Webster (88). James Erickson recorded a 91.
“We are starting to really play good golf when it matters most,” Albers praised. “This week we will play in the Mid-State Conference meet Tuesday and the Wayne Invite Thursday, where there will be seven of the teams in our district playing.”
Also on April 29, the Boone Central junior varsity finished seventh of 10 teams in the St. Francis Invite at Humphrey’s Steepleview Golf Course.
“All but one other team in the tournament were varsity teams, so I thought the guys competed,” Albers noted.
Scoring for Boone were Colton Simons (100), Payton Westerman (100), Lucas Krueger (101), Mikki Borgaard (103) and Jackson Nelson (105).
