Boone softball off to slow start in 2022

Class C preseason Top 10 Central City had a quick start and big finish in the 2022 season opener at the Albion Sports Complex Aug. 18.
The Bison tallied four times in the first inning and closed the contest with a five-run frame, blanking Boone Central 12-0.
It was a quiet night at the plate for the host Cardinals, who mustered only three hits off Central City’s Jerzie Schindler. The Bison junior fanned 14 batters, including eight of the first 10 she faced.
Another slow start made for another uphill climb that fell short Monday night at the sports complex.
Visiting Highway 91 took an early 6-0 lead over the Cardinals and held off Boone’s rally attempts to post an 11-4 victory in varsity action.
Eight errors – four in the first inning – compounded Boone Central’s problems. Highway 91 took advantage of the early miscues, along with three base hits, to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Cyclones boosted that to 6-0 in the top of the second, sparked by Reeves’ triple.
The Cardinals scored their first varsity run of the season in the bottom of the frame when Caydence Guthard drew a walk and came around on Averie Luettel’s double.
Highway 91’s lead grew to 9-1 in the top of the fourth and Boone answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Kali Simons walked and Carlie Langan reached on a single before Guthard and Luettel hit consecutive doubles.
That was all the Cards could tally, however, and Highway 91 added two final runs in the fifth to wrap up the win.
