Seeking to take a step forward in 2022, Boone Central tipped off the volleyball season with a split this past week.
Boone Central hosted West Point-Beemer Tuesday and swept the Cadets 25-14, 27-25, 29-27. The Cardinals burst to leads as large as 17-6 while dominating the first set, then showed their moxie and determination to win tight battles in the final two.
It was a nice team effort by Boone. The Cards reached 33 kills with no one in double figures, led by Mara Ranslem (8), Tristan Hooker (6), Macy Rankin (6) and Elle Webster (5). Kailey Patzel had 16 set assists, Hooker 12. Hooker also served a pair of aces in the contest. Defensively, Boone also spread digs around, paced by Karlie Wies (14), Natalie Schrad (11), Ranslem (10) and Patzel (9). Ranslem and Rankin each recorded two blocks.
Boone’s first road experience of the season was not as kind Thursday, as host O’Neill turned the tables with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 sweep. The Cardinals were competitive in each set, but could not quite gain the upper hand. Hooker (9), Ranslem (8) and Rankin (6) were again kill leaders in a balanced Card attack, with Patzel (14) and Hooker (10) dividing assists. Wies served a pair of aces. Ranslem (18) topped digs with help from Patzel (11) and Schrad (11).
