Boone Central cagers open 2022-23 season with mixed results

Boone Central Boys

Following a tough opening night – and a loss – at Hartington Friday, the Boone Central Cardinals bounced back to square their record Saturday with a home court victory over Lakeview.
Boone, which begins the 2022-23 season relatively inexperienced at the varsity level, ran into a buzzsaw Friday against Class C2 preseason #2 (Omaha World-Herald) Cedar Catholic. The Trojans led at halftime and rode a 12-4 run in the third quarter to a 47-34 advantge, then held off the Cardinals, who finished with a torrid 27-point final period.

Boone Central came back at full speed, and then some, Saturday to notch a 59-47 victory over the Lakeview Vikings in the Cards’ home opener.
With a suffocating full-court press that completely stymied Lakeview in the majority of the first half, Boone ran up a 36-19 lead by intermission. The offensive pace slowed in the second half, but Lakeview was unable to dig deeply into the Cardinal advantage.

Cardinal Girls

Unfortunately for Boone Central, great effort didn’t translate to great results on the opening weekend of the 2022-23 basketball season.
The Cardinals fought hard in a pair of defensive struggles, but dropped narrow decisions to Hartington Cedar Catholic Friday and Lakeview Saturday.
While the Boone Central boys faced a #2 ranked Cedar Catholic team, the Lady Cardinals had the challenge of playing Class D1 preseason #1 Cedar Catholic in their season opener – on the road, no less.
The teams waged a defensive war worthy of Mid-State Conference foes, as the host Trojans scored a 33-26 victory with clutch free throw shooting in the final period.

After coming close at Hartington, Boone Central came even closer on its home court Saturday. In the end, a last-second shot by visiting Lakeview stole a 34-32 decision from the Cardinals.
Boone held a 13-8 halftime lead, which grew to 19-8 early in the third period, but Lakeview outscored the Cards 26-19 overall following intermission, sinking a trio of 3-point shots and 7-of-9 free throws.
