Holiday treats and sweets, and a seven-day layoff, did not hamper the Boone Central Cardinals in their return to the mat Thursday, Dec. 29.
Boone Central rode the efforts of four weight-class champions and nine overall medalists to a runner-up finish in the Newman Grove Holiday Invitational. Only Wilber-Clatonia outscored the Cardinals, with Boone well ahead of the next closest challengers (Norfolk High JV and Battle Creek).
The performance earned praise from Cardinal Coach Josh Majerus.
“The team did great in the Newman Grove holiday tournament,” Majerus said. “After taking seven days off due to the moratorium, you don’t know how the group will look after Christmas. It was nice to see us compete as a group.
“Congratulations to Jaxon Schafer on his 100th career win!”
