Cardinal wrestlers shine at state, tote home 6 medals

What a way to cap a season!
That sentiment came directly from Boone Central Coach Josh Majerus following the 2023 Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha.
“What a rush! So, so cool and fun!” Majerus exclaimed after watching his Cardinals suceed in the competition at the CHI Center Feb. 16-18.
Indeed.
Three Boone Central wrestlers brought home 3rd place medals in the boys portion of the state tournament, and the Lady Cardinals also had three medalists, including one 3rd, in girls competition.
Boone Central finished a lofty 6th in the Class C boys team standings, while the Card girls took 14th – three points short of the top 10 – among all girls teams represented in Omaha (74).

The performances added polish to another successful Boone Central mat season, for which Majerus had plenty of praise.
“The boys and girls had a fantastic season,” Majerus said. “Both teams earned District runner-up, the girls qualified four for the state tournament, and six boys qualified for state.
“This past weekend, the boys medaled three of the six qualifiers, all taking third – totally tough to accomplish. Three of the four girls medaled at state.”
Boone Central 3rd place state medalists were Carson Wood (126), Sam Grape (152), Hank Hudson (220) and Leynn Luna (110). They were joined on the medal stand by Cadence Wood (105, 5th) and Mishayla Slaymaker (100, 6th).
“All season we placed higher than we were rated or predicted to,” Majerus commented. “The girls finished 14th out of every girls team in the state, just shy of a top ten finish. The boys placed sixth of 64 Class C teams, close to a top five finish. We get to add three names to our boys career medalist wrestling wall – unbelievable!”
