Council action will allow ATVs, UTVs and golf carts on streets

The council gave final approval to Ordinance 323(23) setting regulations for the operation of golf carts, all-terrain vehicles, utility type vehicles and low-speed vehicles on city streets effective May 1, 2023.
This ordinance would repeal 10 sections of current city code, change the name of one article and adopt a chapter setting regulations for operation of these vehicles, as well as penalties for violation of the regulations.
The six-page ordinance includes definitions of the various types of vehicles covered.
In order to operate these vehicles, a valid operator’s license and proof of liability insurance coverage will be required. The vehicle must be registered with the City Clerk each year and be located on the vehicle.
Hours of operation will be sunrise to sunset.
Vehicles must be equipped with a brake system in good condition, working headlight and tail light, and a bicycle safety flag at least five feet above ground level.
Safety equipment must include one or more of: a protective safety helmet, three-point safety belt system, or a lap safety belt.
