Boone Central track/field athletes off and running, and jumping, and throwing

Despite continuing dreary weather, the Boone Central Cardinals shot from the starting blocks with an impressive 2023 opening performance at the Wayne State College High School Indoor Track & Field Meet Saturday.
Team scores were not part of the competition, but Boone Central boasted eight individual champions (one double champ) and another three relay event winners. For good measure, the Cardinals had 13 runner-up finishes and earned 50 top-six places overall.
Obviously, Boone Central Coach Susan Roberts was pleased with the start.
“Our kids did a good job in everyone’s first experience at an indoor meet at Wayne,” Roberts said. “Due to COVID they haven’t had this meet indoors since 2019, so it was new to all of our kids.
“We had some very competitive performances, some solid marks to start the year, and saw lots of kids pick up right where they left off last season or better. We’re looking forward now to getting outdoors at home in the Mansfield Invite March 28.”
Boone’s most impressive event Saturday may have been the boys 800 meter run with Alex Christo, Ryan Drueppel and Jaden Hagemann running 1-2-3. The Cardinals also claimed three of the top four finishes in the girls 200 meter dash (Mara Ranslem 1st, Ashlyn Krohn 2nd, Linnea Nissen 4th), three of four in the boys high jump (Jaxon Lipker 1st, Zander Jarecki 3rd, Grant Kuta 4th) and placed 1-2 in the boys long jump (Jackson Roberts, Brogan Benes).
Jack Roberts, who has signed to compete for the South Dakota State track/field program next year, won the 60 meter high hurdles and long jump, along with running in the Cards’ winning 4×400 meter relay.Senior Mara Ranslem won the girls 200 meter dash, ran on the winning 4×160 indoor relay and was runner-up in the 60 meter dash.
