Cornerstone Legion Juniors snare first 2023 victory

Albion’s Cornerstone Legion Juniors broke through to post their first victory of the 2023 season at Schuyler Tuesday, May 30.
Cornerstone led from the start and broke open a taut contest with a six-run fifth inning that propelled the Albion Juniors to a 13-5 triumph. Cornerstone scored its 13 runs on eight hits, aided by seven Schuyler errors.
A Jarrett Rother triple scored Keaton Hunt and Jack Molt, starting a three-run first inning for the Albion Juniors. Leading 3-2, Cornerstone added a pair of in the top of the third, Beckett Jorgensen driving in a run with a single.
After Albion Cornerstone went ahead 6-2 in the fourth, the hosts again pulled within one in the bottom of the frame when a double by Kaasch cleared the bases.
Cornerstone answered immediately in the top of the fifth. Although the Albion Juniors had just two hits in the inning, including an RBI single by Hunt, they took advantage of three walks, two batters hit-by-pitch and three Schuyler errors to plate six.
A trio of Cornerstone pitchers combined efforts in the win. Jacob Miller started and allowed two runs in 1.2 innings. Luke Curry gave up three in 2.2 frames and Carter Molt closed the decision with 1.2 scoreless innings. At the plate, Hunt had the hot bat with a 4-for-5 night, a run scored and one driven in. Rother scored twice, and Carter Molt and Logan Spence each produced an RBI.

A trip north Thursday did not go as smoothly as host Creighton/Plainview thumped the Albion Cornerstone Juniors 15-4.

Cornerstone (1-4) could muster just two hits in the five-inning contest and allowed Creighton/Plainview 11 earned runs in the loss. The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first and took a 15-1 lead with an eight-run third.
It was a rough night on the mound for Albion hurlers. Hunt allowed five earned runs in two-thirds of an inning, Carter Molt surrendered seven runs – six earned – in 1.2 innings, and Jack Molt gave up three – two earned – in one-third of an inning. Jack Molt and Curry (2B) had Cornerstone’s only hits.
