Cardinal harriers off and running

It was a very nice beginning to the 2023 Boone Central cross country season.
A beautiful morning start. A well-tended, challenging Albion Country Club course. Solid, successful efforts by Cardinal runners in their season debuts.
“I’m very pleased with how our runners performed,” new Cardinal Coach Stacy Petersen praised. “With the switch to a morning start, the cool weather assisted some fast times. Many of our top runners saw improvements of 30 seconds and more from this time last year.”
Boone Central had several runners in each division finish well up the medalist standings. Sophomore Micah Cuevas (18:09.80) placed 12th and junior Logan Spence (18:23.80) was 18th in the boys 5k, while Kassidy Beister (22:37.60) placed 13th in the girls competition. Freshman Brynn Petersen (22:54.30) took 15th and freshman Johnna Spence (23:22.70) was 19th.
“This is a large event with schools like Hastings and Columbus High competing. On top of that, there were many returning state medalists, making this a tough field,” Petersen noted. “We ran smart, hard races that our runners should be proud of. This is an encouraging start, but also allowed us to see the top level competition in our district and set some goals for our next race.”
