Good with a gun on horseback

Body
Cowboys and cowgirls from several states showed off their marksmanship from horseback in the mounted shooting contest at Niewohner Arena on the Boone County Fairgrounds last Saturday and Sunday. This cowboy had a perfect ride, breaking all balloons in slightly over 14 seconds.

Top spellers in annual county contest

Boone County’s annual spelling contest for fifth through eighth graders was held last Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Boone Central. The top seven of 36 students in the contest were (front, l.-r.) Jacob Krohn, first place, sixth grader at Boone Central; Zaiden Heusman, second, eighth grader at St. Edward; Julia Baldwin, third, eighth grader at Riverside; Reagan Dobson, fourth, fifth grader at Riverside; (back) Grace Nore, seventh grader, and Leah Erickson, eighth grader, both from St. Michael’s who tied for fifth place, and Vivian Carnley, seventh, eighth grader at Boone Central. Winning word this year was “vagrancy.” Some of the words that eliminated spellers were: avocado, amenable, scrupulous, insightful, financial and gratitude. Ten oral rounds were required to determine the winner.

Many area students named to UNL fall dean’s lists

Many Boone County area students were among 6,800 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students recently named to the fall deans’ lists. Qualification for the deans’ lists vary among the eight undergraduate colleges and the Explore Center.
