More candidate filings for the 2024 elections were recorded during the past week at the Boone County Clerk’s office. Jon Lindgren filed to retain his seat as District 2 County Commissioner.

Due to snow storms in early January, the Boone Central Choral Clinic was rescheduled for next Monday, Feb. 5, with students expected from many area schools.

Doug Young, vice president and manager of Albion’s Cornerstone Bank since January of 2011, is retiring from the position effective this Friday, Feb. 2.

Cowboys and cowgirls from several states showed off their marksmanship from horseback in the mounted shooting contest at Niewohner Arena on the Boone County Fairgrounds last Saturday and Sunday. This cowboy had a perfect ride, breaking all balloons in slightly over 14 seconds.

Boone County’s annual spelling contest for fifth through eighth graders was held last Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Boone Central. The top seven of 36 students in the contest were (front, l.-r.) Jacob Krohn, first place, sixth grader at Boone Central; Zaiden Heusman, second, eighth grader at St. Edward; Julia Baldwin, third, eighth grader at Riverside; Reagan Dobson, fourth, fifth grader at Riverside; (back) Grace Nore, seventh grader, and Leah Erickson, eighth grader, both from St. Michael’s who tied for fifth place, and Vivian Carnley, seventh, eighth grader at Boone Central. Winning word this year was “vagrancy.” Some of the words that eliminated spellers were: avocado, amenable, scrupulous, insightful, financial and gratitude. Ten oral rounds were required to determine the winner.

Recent wireless internet upgrades in the Albion and Petersburg areas, as well as plans for further upgrades in the coming year, were discussed by the Boone County Commissioners on Monday, Jan. 29.

Levander Funeral Home staff and helpers moved quickly to move in and prepare the new funeral home building for an open house last Thursday, Jan. 25.

Snow storms in January eliminated the worst areas of Nebraska’s drought, according to analysts from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Many Boone County area students were among 6,800 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students recently named to the fall deans’ lists. Qualification for the deans’ lists vary among the eight undergraduate colleges and the Explore Center.
